Pillar Contractor Completes Major Engineering Infrastructure Upgrade Works at the Opera

June 4, 2026

Energy efficiency improvement and engineering system renewal works have been completed at the building of the Latvian National Opera.

The scope of the project was particularly extensive. More than 40 kilometres of electrical cabling were installed, along with approximately four kilometres of heating pipes, three kilometres of hot and cold water supply pipes, and over one kilometre of sewerage piping. Wall and ceiling surfaces were also restored, and lighting fixtures appropriate to the building’s historic interior were installed. As a result, the historic building’s indoor climate, energy efficiency, and working environment have been significantly improved.

In addition to the works included in the project, restoration of the historic interior on the stalls level is still ongoing. With particular care, interior restoration works are being carried out in stages, including wallpaper installation and floor tiling. These works are scheduled to be fully completed before the start of the new season.

The project aims to preserve and develop an important cultural heritage site – the historic building of the Latvian National Opera, which is a state-protected architectural monument – while simultaneously improving its energy efficiency and ensuring its sustainable operation in the future. During the renovation process, particular attention was paid to preserving the building’s historical authenticity, respecting original materials, technologies, and traditional construction methods.

The project is financed through European Union programmes, as well as funds provided by the state-owned company Latvian National Opera and Ballet.

The total cost of the Latvian National Opera building development project amounted to EUR 12.5 million.
